When Tanya Short first pitched the slot idea for Boyfriend Dungeon, a computer game in which the player's romantic partners are weapons to defeat monsters, publishers showed little interest in it.
“They all rejected him. They said the title was uninteresting or they just didn't get it,” says Ms. Short, director and CEO of independent game studio Kitfox Games.
It was only after the growing buzz around the game and some initial funds through Kickstarter that gaming platforms changed their tune.
Boyfriend Dungeon is now available on various systems including PC, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
But Ms. Short worries that quirky games like hers, developed by creative independent studios, will have an even harder path to market in the future as the biggest gaming corporations expand. |
